Military: MacMunn (Mjr. G.F.) The Armies of India, thick 8vo, L. (A. & C. Black) 1911, First Edn., frontis & illustrations by Major A.C. Lovett, with various alterations, notes, etc., red cloth. Nice Association Copy. (1)
Note: Birdwood - or 'Birdie' - had a long association with India. Born in Kirkee, India, of Anglo-Indian parents, Birdie served on several Indian Army campaigns. After a distinguished career during the First World War - he was responsible for organising the evacuation of Gallipoli in 1915-16 - Birdwood was appointed to the Executive Council of the Governor-General of India in July 1925. A month later he was promoted to Commander-in-Chief, India, a position he held until his retirement in 1930. This book, therefore, touched on a subject near his heart and was a very appropriate gift.
