The Only Inscribed Copy Known to Us

[Tone (Theobald Wolfe)]An Argument on behalf of the Catholics of Ireland.  1791, re-printed by order of the Society of United Irishmen of Belfast.  Disbound (evidently from a collection of pamphlets), pp. 32.  Inscribed on t.p., ‘To Henry Barry Esq. and Colonel Foot – with great respect from the Author’ [i.e. Tone].  Inscription slightly trimmed but legible.
Tone’s revolutionary pamphlet arguing that Catholics and Protestants should unite to break the connection with England – the never-failing source of all our political evils, signed as by ‘A Northern Whig’, issued in the same year when Tone, with Thomas Russell and James Napper Tandy, founded the Society of United Irishmen - just seven years before his death while awaiting execution for high treason.

Probably the most important Irish pamphlet issued during the entire 18th century, and the only known copy to bear the author’s inscription (though not his signature).
