Co. Carlow: George III - General Assizes, a Grant of Pardon unto Charles Nowlan (as a poor man) convicted at Carlow 1794 - felony of conduct: by enlisting as a soldier. [The conviction to be imprisoned for a space of six months and to be publicly whipped through the town of Carlow; for stealing one red cloak valued at 16 shillings and 3 pence in October 1793]. The Pardon states that he must enlist as a soldier with the Sixty First Regiment of Foot, as a m/ss, w.a.f. (1) Interesting insight into the British methods of recruitment for the army in the 18th Century.
